Our Work

We stand in solidarity with the poor and suffering of the world.  We engage in hospitality for homeless persons, support for prisoners and their families, educational work in schools and the community, and efforts to end the death penalty.  We resist racism, materialism, and militarism. We advocate for a more just society through nonviolent protests, grassroots organization, and the publication of our newspaper.

Manna House

We run a house of hospitality for homeless persons that we call “Manna House.”  Manna House is open Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings.  We offer showers and a change of clothes, coffee, conversation, and more.

Its such a great place it has its own webpage here. Contact Peter Gathje at Emmanuel House if you are interested in becoming involved.

Jail and Prison Visitation

We visit on death row and at 201 Poplar—the Shelby County Jail.  We also offer support for those we visit, bringing family members, or helping with expenses.

We seek to support guests from Manna House who are jailed at 201 Poplar. We seek to maintain a list of those incarcerated and encourage visitation. We also visit and support those imprisoned on Tennessee’s Death Row. Visits to Death Row take place approximately once a month.

Contact Peter Gathje at Emmanuel House if you are interested in visiting or providing support for a person in jail.

Sack Lunches for Persons at Labor Pools

Each Monday morning we distribute sack lunches for persons waiting to work at two different labor pools.  Every Sunday we gather at 4:30pm to make sack lunches to be distributed on Monday morning at a local labor pool. If you are interested in participating please call Emmanuel House at 901.272.0509.

Works of Justice

We engage in a variety of actions, often joining with people from different organizations, to advocate for justice.  This includes a demonstration each Wednesday afternoon for the abolition of the death penalty, various peace demonstrations, work for the living wage and other issues of economic justice, and advocacy for just treatment of homeless persons and persons in jail.
